Excuse my passion for plants that others dismiss. It is not meant as judgment. This journal originated as a way to slow down, perceive and contemplate the unnoticed during the Covid lockdown of 2020 as spring arrived. I found small plants within 3 feet of our front door. Choosing one each day for two weeks, I drew the plant to scale, used an app to identify and consider the Latin and common name and carefully draw and observed the predominant color. As each sketchbook study was complete, I recreated each color found in the plant and mapped it onto the color map.
As I observed the beloved lawns, those sweet, emerald carpets of unified lush and verdant blue grass carefully cared for by my generous neighbors, I came to know the native plants that can grow and develop in the same soil and know how ‘fine they are’.
